Electrical items must not be disposed of in general waste. They must be taken to an authorised treatment facility. Hazardous components — gases, heavy metals, batteries — must be safely extracted before any recycling can take place.

Fly-tipping is a criminal offence under Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act. Penalties include fines of up to £400 for householders, unlimited fines for businesses, and up to five years' imprisonment for serious offences.
