How the estimate is worked out
Two things set the shape of a removal bill: how much is moving and how far it is going. The estimator starts from a base for your home size, scales it for the distance band, then adds the options you pick — packing, an extra mover, a weekend slot. It shows a range rather than a single number because the same volume over the same distance is not the same job twice.
| What you are moving | Typically needs |
|---|---|
| Single item | A part load — the item travels alongside other jobs |
| Studio | A driver and one mover for a half day |
| 1 bed | A driver and one mover, most of a day |
| 2 bed | A driver and one mover, most of a day |
| 3 bed | A driver and a second mover, a full day |
| 4 bed+ | A driver and a second mover, a full day |
You pay in full when you book — there's no deposit and nothing to pay on the day. Any extras — stairs (from £28 a flight), difficult parking (£30), and London congestion (£18) or ULEZ (£12.5) charges — are worked out and included in your quote before you book, so the price you see is the price you pay. Every booking includes £500 of cover free, with £3,000 Plus cover available for £12.
What the estimate cannot see
A range built from a home size and a distance band is missing the five things that most often separate the estimate from the quote. Each of these is priced from your actual job, up front, before you book.
| Factor | Why it moves the price |
|---|---|
| Stairs and lift access | Flights carried at either end add crew time; a working lift removes most of it. |
| Parking distance | How close the van gets to the door decides how far every item is walked. |
| Your real route | Two addresses, not a band — traffic, congestion and ULEZ zones are priced from the actual journey. |
| Item list | Pianos, safes, garden machinery and anything needing dismantling are handled item by item. |
| Date and time slot | Weekends and month-end are the busiest slots; midweek is consistently the cheapest. |

Removal cost questions
Treat it as a planning range, not a price. The estimator works from the things that move the bill most — how much you are shifting, how far it is going, and whether you want packing or an extra pair of hands.
It cannot see your stairs, your parking, or the sofa that will not go round the landing, and those change real jobs. Your quote is the number that binds; this is the number that tells you whether to keep reading.
Volume and distance set the floor. On top of that: access at both ends, how many flights of stairs, how far the van can park from the door, the day you pick, and whether we pack for you.
A ground-floor two-bed with a driveway and a third-floor two-bed with a shared stairwell are the same volume and not the same job.
Usually, yes. Saturdays are the busiest slot of the week and price accordingly. Midweek is consistently the cheapest time to move, and if your dates are flexible that single change saves more than most of the other levers on this page combined.
Yes. Every figure shown on Giant Van is inclusive of VAT, so the range here is comparable with the quote you get at checkout and with what you actually pay.
Because the quote knows things the estimator does not: your two real addresses, the route between them, your item list, your access, and your date. When those land, the price moves. It is fixed before you book — you see the final number, agree it, and it does not change on the day.
This page prices your move. The removal cost guide explains what UK moves cost in general — typical prices by house size and service, regional differences, and the fees that catch people out. Use the guide to learn the market, use this tool to size your own job.
Move midweek rather than at a weekend, pack yourself instead of adding the packing service, and declutter before you get quoted — you pay to move volume, so every bag that goes to the charity shop first is volume you are not paying for. Booking with notice also opens up more slots than a same-day scramble.
