Removal Costs & Pricing FAQs
Removal company costs in the UK depend on property size, distance, and date. Typical prices for local moves: Studio/1-bed £180–£350, 2-bed £350–£550, 3-bed £500–£800, 4+ bed £800–£1,500. Long-distance moves add travel time and fuel — shown clearly in your quote. Use our removal cost calculator for your exact price in 60 seconds.
Get Your QuoteMan and van prices start from around £45–£80 for local jobs under 10 miles. For 2–4 hour jobs, expect £80–£150. Full-day hire typically runs £200–£350. Prices depend on van size, distance, and crew required. Get your exact price through our instant quote tool.
Get Instant QuoteMan and van rates in the UK typically range from £30–£60 per hour depending on your location, van size, and the number of helpers. London rates tend to sit at the higher end (£45–£60/hour), while other UK cities average £30–£45/hour. Most jobs are quoted as a fixed price rather than hourly to give you certainty.
Get Instant QuoteThe total cost of moving house in the UK combines your removal company quote plus any extras you add: packing services, storage, or specialist items such as a piano. Most customers spend between £300 and £1,500 depending on property size. Our quote tool shows your all-in price upfront — no surprises on the day.
Average removals costs in the UK for a local move: 1-bed ~£250–£400, 2-bed ~£400–£600, 3-bed ~£600–£900, 4+ bed ~£900–£1,600. Your actual removal cost depends on access conditions, chosen date, and any additional services. Get your personalised quote for an accurate figure.
Get Your QuoteAverage removal costs for a 3-bed house in the UK are £600–£900 for a local move (under 50 miles) and £800–£1,200 for a long-distance move. These figures include a two-person crew, a large van, and basic goods-in-transit insurance. Packing services and furniture disassembly are additional but shown clearly in your quote.
Get Your QuoteLong-distance removal costs in the UK depend on distance and volume. Typical prices: 1-bed £400–£700, 2-bed £600–£1,000, 3-bed £800–£1,200, 4+ bed £1,200–£2,000. Moves over 200 miles or between England and Scotland attract higher fuel and time charges. Enter your postcodes for an instant long-distance quote.
Get Long-Distance QuoteYes. Enter your postcodes, property size, and move date at www.giantvan.com/quote for an instant, itemised price. No registration needed. It takes around 60 seconds and covers all standard services.
Try the CalculatorMoving costs in the UK in 2025–2026: Man and van from £55/hour (local), 2-bed full removals from £400 (local), 3-bed full removals from £600 (local), long-distance 3-bed from £800–£1,200. Mid-week, mid-month bookings are nearly always cheaper than weekends and end-of-month dates.
See Live PricingNo hidden fees. Your Giant Van quote includes the driver, fuel, and basic goods-in-transit insurance. The only additional charges are optional services you actively choose to add — packing, premium insurance, or extra helpers. Every line item is shown before you confirm your booking.
Several factors determine your removal cost: distance between pickup and drop-off addresses, volume of items and van size required, access — stairs, no lift, or a long carry from door to van, date — weekends and end-of-month attract higher demand, and additional services such as packing, furniture assembly, or storage.
Access is factored into your quote automatically. Ground-floor to ground-floor is the standard baseline. Extra floors or restricted parking may add to the cost, but this is always shown upfront — never added as a surprise on the day.
End-of-month dates, Fridays, and weekends attract significantly higher demand. Booking mid-week or mid-month typically means a lower price and better availability. Our quote tool shows pricing across different dates so you can find the best value slot if your move date is flexible.

Insurance & Protection FAQs
Yes. Basic goods-in-transit insurance is included with every Giant Van booking. It covers accidental damage during loading, transit, and unloading. Coverage limits are shown on your booking confirmation.
Basic insurance covers loss or damage caused by accident during the move — items dropped, damaged in transit, or lost. It does not cover items you pack yourself (unless we do the packing), pre-existing damage, or excluded categories listed below.
Yes. Premium insurance is available and provides higher coverage limits, including for items you've packed yourself. Select it when booking or message us in the live chat on this page to discuss your specific requirements.
Standard exclusions include: cash, jewellery, and important documents — carry these yourself; items packed by you, unless you've booked our packing services; pre-existing damage to items; items not declared at the time of booking; and damage caused by your own actions during the move.
Report any damage within 7 days via our claims page. You'll need your booking reference and photos of the damaged items. We aim to resolve all claims within 14 days.
Yes — we strongly recommend it. Photograph valuable or fragile items before the crew arrives. This confirms their condition prior to the move and makes any claim process considerably more straightforward.
Items you pack yourself are not covered under our basic goods-in-transit insurance — only items packed by our crew are covered as standard. If you prefer to pack your own boxes, you can upgrade to premium insurance which extends coverage to self-packed items. Alternatively, book our packing service for full protection.
Goods-in-transit insurance covers your belongings against loss or damage while they are being transported from one location to another. It applies during loading, transit, and unloading. Giant Van includes basic goods-in-transit insurance with every booking at no extra charge.
Packing Help & Preparation FAQs
Yes. Our packing services range from fragile-only packing to full property packing. A packing helper from Giant Van saves significant time, reduces the risk of breakages, and means items packed by us are fully covered by our goods-in-transit insurance. Add packing when you book or message us in the live chat to discuss what level of help you need.
A little preparation makes your move quicker and smoother: pack everything into boxes and bags (or book our packing services), label boxes clearly by room, disassemble flat-pack furniture where possible, clear pathways through doorways and hallways, defrost your fridge/freezer 24 hours before moving day, and confirm parking availability at both addresses.
See our full packing guide for detailed advice on every room.
Yes. Our crews can take apart and reassemble beds, wardrobes, dining tables, and most flat-pack furniture. Let us know at booking so we can allocate adequate time. Complex fitted furniture or built-in units may require a specialist.
We supply boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and wardrobe boxes — add these when you book and we bring them to you. Many customers also source free boxes from local supermarkets. We also offer reusable crate hire as an eco-friendly alternative to single-use cardboard.
Wrap every item individually in bubble wrap or packing paper, use generous padding at the base and sides of each box, mark boxes clearly as FRAGILE — THIS WAY UP, keep boxes a manageable weight — never overfill, and for valuable or irreplaceable items, consider our professional packing services.
Yes. Water plants sparingly the day before to reduce weight and the risk of spillage. Plants travel best in open-top boxes or crates. We are not liable for damage caused by temperature or light changes during transit.
Moving Day FAQs
You choose a time slot at booking. We provide a 2-hour arrival window (e.g. 8am–10am). You'll receive a text or app notification when the crew is en route, with a live tracking link so you can follow their progress.
Traffic and back-to-back jobs can occasionally push timings back. If we're running late, we'll contact you proactively with an updated ETA. Significant delays are rare, but when they do happen we'll make it right.
Typical durations for local moves: 1-bed 2–4 hours, 2-bed 4–6 hours, 3-bed 6–8 hours. Long-distance moves add travel time on top. Your quote includes an estimated duration specific to your job.
Yes — someone aged 18 or over must be present at both the pickup and delivery addresses to sign the job off. You can nominate a trusted friend, family member, or neighbour if you cannot be there yourself.
For insurance reasons, customers cannot travel in the removal vehicle. You'll need to make your own way to your new address. Our crews work efficiently, so your belongings will follow quickly.
We recommend arranging parking in advance: apply to suspend a bay if needed (contact your local council), let neighbours know to keep the space clear on the day, and check for any access restrictions or time-limited bays. If parking is unavoidably difficult, the crew will find the nearest safe legal spot.
Extended carrying distance may be required and will be noted on the job sheet.
Yes. Our crews are trained and experienced with awkward access — narrow Victorian staircases, tight bends, third-floor flats with no lift. Let us know about any specific access challenges at booking so we can plan the right crew size and equipment.
Moving House Checklist FAQs
A thorough moving house checklist covers everything from eight weeks before your move to the day itself. 8 weeks before: declutter — donate, sell, or dispose of what you won't move; get removal quotes and confirm your booking; research schools, GPs, and amenities at your new area.
4–6 weeks before: confirm your Giant Van booking, start sourcing packing boxes and materials, notify your employer, HMRC, and financial institutions of your upcoming address change. 2–3 weeks before: set up a Royal Mail post redirect from your old address, notify utility providers — gas, electricity, water, broadband, update your driving licence and vehicle registration (DVLA).
1 week before: confirm parking arrangements at both addresses, pack non-essential rooms fully, defrost your fridge/freezer 24 hours before moving day. Moving day: be ready and waiting at the start of your time slot, check every room, loft space, and cupboard before you leave, take meter readings at both properties, sign the job sheet on completion.
After you move, you need to update your address with a range of organisations.
Priority contacts: DVLA — driving licence and vehicle registration, HMRC and your employer — payroll, tax credits, self-assessment, banks and financial institutions — current accounts, savings, mortgages, the electoral register — register to vote at your new address, your GP, dentist, and optician — re-register locally if needed, TV Licensing and local council — council tax account, insurance providers — home, car, life, and contents insurance, and subscription services — broadband, streaming platforms, magazines.
When moving house, notify these organisations promptly: DVLA (within 14 days — it is a legal requirement), HMRC, your employer, your bank and mortgage provider, council tax at both old and new councils, utility providers (gas, electric, water, broadband), Royal Mail for post redirection, your GP, dentist, and optician, TV Licensing, the electoral register, and any insurance providers.
Start notifying 2–3 weeks before your move date.
Start at least 8 weeks before your move date. The earlier you begin, the calmer moving day will be. Booking your removal company is the most time-sensitive task — popular dates in summer and at month-ends fill up weeks in advance.
In the week before moving day: finish packing non-essential rooms, confirm your booking time slot with Giant Van, arrange parking at both addresses (apply for a bay suspension if needed), defrost your fridge and freezer, prepare a moving day essentials bag with phone chargers, toiletries, medication, and important documents.
The day before: disassemble any remaining furniture and do a final walkthrough.
On moving day: take final meter readings (gas, electric, water), strip beds and pack bedding, do a room-by-room check — open every cupboard, drawer, and loft hatch, lock all windows and hand over keys to your estate agent or new owner.
At your new home: check meter readings on arrival, show the crew where furniture goes, and keep your essentials bag handy.

Get Long-Distance QuoteYes. London to Manchester is one of the most popular long-distance routes we cover. The journey is approximately 200 miles and takes a full day. Get Long-Distance QuoteA long-distance move typically takes a full day. Loading takes 2–4 hours depending on property size, travel time depends on distance (e.g. London to Birmingham is around 2.5 hours, London to Edinburgh around 7 hours), and unloading takes 1–3 hours. Your quote includes an estimated duration specific to your route.
Yes, but it is already included in your quote. The price you see covers loading, the outbound journey, unloading, and the crew's return. There are no surprise charges for the return trip — everything is factored into your upfront price.
The cheapest long-distance removal options include: booking mid-week and mid-month to avoid peak demand surcharges, decluttering before your move to reduce volume and van size, being flexible on dates if possible, and comparing our man and van service for smaller loads versus full removals for larger homes. Our quote tool shows the most cost-effective option for your move.
Compare PricesStudent & Single Item Moves FAQs
Student removals typically cost £80–£250 depending on volume, distance, and time of year. A single room of belongings moving locally starts from around £80–£120. Longer distances cost more. We offer student-friendly rates, especially during off-peak times outside of September and June.
Get Student QuoteYes. Our single item delivery service is ideal for sofas, beds, wardrobes, washing machines, and other large items. Prices start from around £45 for local single item jobs. We also collect from retailers, private sellers, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and auction houses.
Get Single Item QuoteYes. Our marketplace collection service handles pickups from eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, and other online platforms. We collect, transport, and deliver — you do not need to hire a van yourself. Enter both postcodes in our quote tool for an instant price.
Get Collection QuoteYes. We regularly move students to and from university halls, shared houses, and student flats across the UK. We are experienced with restricted access, busy campuses, and tight parking. Book early for September and June moves when demand is highest.
Yes. Same-day and next-day delivery is often available for single items and smaller jobs, subject to driver availability in your area. Check availability through our quote tool or message us in the live chat on this page for urgent bookings.
Check AvailabilityYes. We move all major appliances including washing machines, fridge-freezers, dishwashers, and tumble dryers. Our crew will disconnect and reconnect where straightforward. For gas appliances, you will need a registered Gas Safe engineer — we can transport the appliance but cannot make gas connections.

Cancellations & Changes FAQs
Yes, subject to our cancellation policy: cancel 7+ days before your move for a full refund; 3–6 days before, 50% is refundable; under 3 days before, the payment is non-refundable. To cancel, message us in the live chat on this page or manage your booking through your online account.
Date changes are usually possible, subject to availability. Contact us as early as possible. Changes made with less than 48 hours' notice may incur a rescheduling fee.
If you have more items than quoted, the crew can often accommodate small additions. Significantly more volume may require a second trip or a price adjustment. If you know your inventory has grown, update your booking in advance to guarantee capacity.
The crew's time is allocated specifically for your move. If you're not ready, they may need to wait (charged at the hourly rate) or, in some cases, the job may need to reschedule. We strongly recommend being fully packed and ready before your arrival window begins.
Moves proceed in the vast majority of weather conditions. In exceptional circumstances — heavy snow or flooding — we may need to reschedule for the safety of the crew and your belongings. We will always contact you proactively and rebook at no extra cost.
