Delivery Vehicle Requirements for Giant Van Driver Partners
Giant Van sets clear delivery vehicle requirements so every driver stays safe, legal, and ready to earn. Your vehicle must hold a valid MOT, carry hire and reward insurance, and meet our roadworthiness standards. Meeting these requirements protects you from roadside penalties and keeps your account active.
This page covers everything your vehicle needs before and during your time on the platform. Check back whenever UK regulations change.

Road Tax
Your vehicle must be taxed for the road. SORN'd vehicles cannot be used on the platform. We verify tax status through DVLA records during onboarding and periodically thereafter.
Reminders: The Giant Van dashboard sends automatic reminders 30, 14, and 3 days before your MOT and tax expiry dates.
What Causes MOT Failure (Common Issues for Vans)
Tyres
Minimum 1.6mm tread depth across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Check weekly.
Brakes
Worn pads, binding callipers, corroded discs. Heavy use in stop-start delivery work accelerates wear.
Lights
Blown bulbs, cracked lenses, misaligned headlights. Check before every shift.
Suspension
Worn bushes, leaking shock absorbers. Frequent loading and unloading stresses suspension components.
Exhaust and Emissions
Damaged exhausts, high emissions. Diesel vans must pass emissions testing.
Bodywork
Sharp edges from damage, excessive corrosion. Loading door condition matters.
Insurance Requirements — What Coverage You Need
Standard personal van insurance does not cover paid delivery or removals work. As a Giant Van driver partner, you need specialist commercial insurance. This is a legal requirement, not a platform preference.
MANDATORY INSURANCE
01
Hire and Reward
LEGAL REQCovers: Carrying goods belonging to others for payment
Why required: Legal requirement under the Road Traffic Act. Without it, your insurance is void during paid work.
02
Goods in Transit (GIT)
MIN COVERCovers: Customer's belongings whilst in your care
Why required: Covers loss, damage, or theft of items you're transporting. Minimum £10,000 cover recommended.
03
Public Liability
REQUIREDCovers: Third-party injury or property damage during work
Why required: Covers incidents at pickup and delivery locations. Minimum £1 million cover required.
Upload your insurance certificates to the driver dashboard during onboarding. If your insurance lapses, your account is automatically paused until valid cover is uploaded.
Driver CPC and Licensing Requirements
Whether you need a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) depends on your vehicle's gross vehicle weight.
Under 3.5 Tonnes GVW
- Cat B licence (held 2+ years)
- CPC not required
- Tachograph not required
- Operator licence not required
MOST DRIVERS HERE
Most Giant Van drivers fall into this category. A standard full UK driving licence is all you need.
Over 3.5 Tonnes (Up to 7.5 Tonnes)
- Cat C1 licence (or C1E for trailers)
- CPC required — 35 hours every 5 years
- Tachograph required (digital, DVSA-monitored)
- Operator licence may be required — contact Driver Support if unsure
7.5T CATEGORY ONLY
If you drive a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes GVW commercially, you must hold a valid Driver CPC qualification card.
About Driver CPC
The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) is a qualification for professional lorry and bus drivers. If you drive a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes GVW for commercial purposes, you must hold a valid Driver CPC qualification card.
- Road safety and fuel-efficient driving
- Legal requirements for commercial transport
- Health and safety, including manual handling
- Customer service and professional conduct
CPC training must be completed through a DVSA-approved training provider. Your CPC qualification card must be uploaded to your driver dashboard.

Tachograph Requirements
For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, digital tachographs record driving time, rest periods, and working hours. DVSA enforcement officers conduct roadside checks, and penalties for non-compliance are severe — including prohibition notices that prevent you from continuing your journey.
Giant Van provides guidance on tachograph compliance during driver training for our 7.5-tonne category drivers.
