We measure piano width at the keyboard end and at the broadest body section before confirming any job. If a standard upright will not fit through a door, we discuss alternatives: hoisting through a front window is a legitimate and safe option when carried out by trained operatives with the right lifting gear.

A piano is a precision instrument.

The action mechanism inside a modern upright contains over 7,500 individual moving parts. Any significant jolt during transit can dislodge hammers, break strings or knock the instrument out of tune. This is why the way a piano travels matters as much as how it is loaded and unloaded.

Giant Van secures pianos inside the van using a three-point anchoring system.

The instrument sits on a rubberised non-slip mat on the van floor. Two heavy-duty ratchet straps run from the instrument frame to D-rings welded into the van side walls. A third strap secures the top section. The piano does not move in transit, even over rough road surfaces like the cobbled section of Bottle Bank near the High Level Bridge approach.

Our padding protocol covers the full instrument before it exits the building.

We use 15 mm moving blankets on all exposed surfaces, secured with stretch wrap at the piano body and individual wrap on the pedal lyre and any protruding handles. The keyboard lid is locked or taped shut before we move the instrument. We do not remove a piano's keyboard cover during a move unless the lock is broken and there is a risk of it flying open.

On arrival, unpacking is methodical.

We remove wrapping in reverse order, check for transit damage to the casing and pedals, and position the instrument on its casters or feet exactly where you specify. If you need the piano on a rug or mat, have it laid before we arrive so the piano goes straight onto its final surface without a second lift.
