Safe, Specialist Delivery Across CB1–CB5

Giant Van moves all common piano types across the Cambridge area.

Each requires a different approach, and our crews are trained on all of them.

Upright pianos are the most common request we receive in CB1, CB2, and CB4.

These instruments typically weigh between 180 kg and 270 kg. Most can be moved through a standard doorway, but older Cambridge terraces — particularly those in the Mill Road corridor and the streets behind Romsey — often have front doors as narrow as 76 cm. We measure before committing.

Baby grand pianos require the legs to be removed before the instrument is tilted onto its side and wrapped.

The lid, pedal lyre, and legs are each wrapped and transported separately. Properties in Newnham and on Grange Road — where detached houses with wider hallways are more common — are better suited to grand piano access, though we still assess every site.

Concert grands are rare in private homes but do appear in Cambridge college music rooms and private rehearsal spaces.

If you are moving a concert grand from a college site such as King's or Trinity, access through the porters' lodge and across cobbled courts requires advance coordination with the college porters and sometimes a police notification for street closures on King's Parade.

Digital stage pianos and keyboard workstations are lighter but still need proper transit wrapping to protect screens, keys, and wooden casings.

We treat these with the same care as acoustic instruments.

We also move pianolas and older upright instruments that have extra internal weight from their roll mechanisms.

These can be surprisingly heavy relative to their size.

If you need an instrument collected and delivered on the same day you call, ring us on before 10 am and we will confirm whether a slot is available.

Same-day jobs come up more often than you might expect.

A piano sold on Facebook Marketplace needs collecting before the seller leaves for the weekend. A student heading back to CB1 after graduation needs the family upright moved in from Histon the same morning. A rehearsal space in the Grafton area needs an instrument temporarily relocated before an evening event.

We keep same-day pricing consistent with our standard rates.

There is no premium for booking on the day unless the job requires overtime hours outside our standard operating window of 7 am to 8 pm. If you need a late evening delivery — say, to a music room off Mill Road after 8 pm — we will quote this honestly upfront.

The Giant Van GPS tracking system means you know exactly where your crew is and when to expect them.

The app sends real-time updates from the moment the crew sets off. You do not need to ring us repeatedly for an ETA.

For advance bookings, we recommend booking at least three to five days ahead for CB1 and CB2 addresses where parking suspension permits may be required.

For CB3 and CB4, where parking is generally easier, 48 hours' notice is usually sufficient for a standard piano move.
